Unemployment rates increased across South Carolina in June, including in Bamberg, Calhoun and Orangeburg counties, according to figures released Friday by the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce.

The jobless rate in Bamberg County increased from 6.9 percent in May to 8.4 percent in June. It had the state’s second-highest unemployment rate behind Marlboro County.

Orangeburg County’s unemployment rate increased from 5.6 percent in May to 7 percent in June. It had the fifth-highest unemployment rate among the state’s 46 counties.

Calhoun County’s unemployment rate increased from 4.1 percent to 5.1 percent in June. It had the state’s 18th highest rate.

The statewide rate increased from 3.4 percent in May to 3.6 percent in June.

S.C. DEW Executive Director William Floyd said the state continues to set new records, with 2.4 million people working.

“It is exciting to see South Carolina setting records as the size of our workforce is the largest ever. That’s good news, but there is still more work to be done, as suggested by the uptick in the unemployment rate,” he said.

Floyd noted, “There are many opportunities for those who do not currently have a job to connect with employment or training. Contact an SC Works center to evaluate your choices and take the next step toward joining South Carolina’s record-setting workforce.”
