When Khala Pace, a South Carolina State University MBA graduate, received her degree, she was driven by a deep personal connection to Orangeburg.
Khala Pace’s desire to give back led to the creation of the Black Joy Foundation, a non-profit for young men aged 9-12.
“I fell in love with Orangeburg,” Khala shares, “I went to grad school during COVID, so I spent a lot of time getting to know the city.” This love for the city and its youth inspired her to use her MBA to give back, leading to the creation of the Black Joy Foundation, a non-profit for young men aged 9-12.
“I started with five foundational pillars of Economic Financial Literacy, Leadership, Teamwork, Self-Actualization, and Life Skills and built a day filled with fun, laughter, games, great food, and mentorship for black boys,” Pace shares, “The first event, appropriately named ‘Black Boy Joy’ was such a success, I made it my mission to grow it.” Each student is also given school supplies, a signature T-shirt, and the ability to stay in contact with mentors.

Since its inception, Black Boy Joy has grown significantly, touching the lives of around 100 young men with the day-long event. This year, Pace has taken it a step further with a week-long day retreat that includes two meals, school supplies, a signature T-shirt, games, laughter, and of course joy. This expansion is a testament to the program’s progress and its commitment to the youth of Orangeburg.
The Black Boy Joy Retreat 2024, where empowerment meets celebration and every moment is a step towards a brighter, bolder future, will be held in Orangeburg from July 29th to August 1st at the New City Fellowship. It’s more than an event; it’s a celebration of strength, resilience, and boundless possibilities.
