A march and youth day event to honor civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 20, will begin with a march that will star…

Kelvin Gadson Sr. started the Giving a Child a Dream Foundation in 2004 to help youth in Orangeburg, the same youth he plans to get involved in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Day event.

The fifth annual event will begin with a march that will start 11 a.m. at the downtown Memorial Plaza. Participants will march from Memorial Plaza to the Orangeburg County Courthouse MLK monument.

“At the downtown square from 10 to 11 a.m., we will also have music and face painting. We also let the kids make signs,” Gadson said.

He said free hot chocolate will also be served at Memorial Plaza ahead of the march.

A program will begin at noon, with Ricardo Sprinkle, a junior agribusiness student at South Carolina State University, serving as speaker.

Singing and praise dancing will be among the live entertainment at the event, which will also feature free light refreshments.

Gadson’s organization would normally take children to The King Center in Atlanta, but he said the Orangeburg County Courthouse MLK monument affords his foundation the ability to have an event at home.

“Our speaker was one of our very own that we used to take to Atlanta. As I look back now, even one of the coaches from Bowman was taken to Atlanta, as well. Those guys are now men and have youth under them. It keeps the legacy going,” Gadson said.

“Ricardo also has his own clothing line. So we just try to let the kids in Orangeburg see that you can be great. Great things can come from Orangeburg,” he said.
