South Carolina State University is celebrating International Awareness Month with a series of events throughout November.

Activities recognize the diverse cultures represented by students, faculty and staff on campus. as well as the university’s many connections around the world.

“Each day we can learn from each other and make the world a happier place,” said Dr. Learie Luke, director of SC State’s Office of Global Engagement. “As we make intentional efforts to listen to and understand people from different backgrounds, we learn to appreciate and embrace the traditions of our fellowmen, and we value treating them as brothers and sisters.”

With that in mind, this year’s theme, “Connecting Across Cultural Borders,” will be highlighted by the programs and events scheduled for November.

The celebration kicked off on Friday with the North Indian Cooking Class and Cultural Showcase in SC State’s Staley Hall. The event was timed with Diwali, also spelled Divali, one of the major religious festivals in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism celebrated all over the world.
