The advanced age of President Joe Biden and the lack of experience and unpopularity of Vice President Kamala Harris present major problems for the Democratic Party in the 2024 elections.
Biden would be 86 years old at the end of his second term in office … and there are reasons to fear that he may be unable to avoid leaves of absence due to ill health or that he might not survive to complete his term.
Former President Barack Obama is eligible to run for and hold the vice presidency and would bring his eight years of experience in the White House and popularity to the Democratic ticket next year.
Amendment XXII to the United States Constitution does not bar Obama from candidacy and office as vice president and does not bar him from being president. The amendment merely says that, having been president for two terms, he cannot run for a third term as president. As vice president, Obama could take over if Biden was temporarily or permanently unable to serve as president and would provide assurance that the administration was in well-known and experienced hands.

Kamala Harris could serve in another position in a second Biden administration, perhaps as a Cabinet officer to enhance her résumé and run again for president in 2028 and let the voters decide her future.
