Jada Fludd and Ania Chalk were remembered Tuesday by a crowd that gathered to celebrate their lives with a community balloon release service.

Fludd, 16, and Chalk, 8, were killed as they were trying to cross U.S. Highway 601 on a 2020 Kawasaki ATV. They were struck by a tractor-trailer on Saturday afternoon, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Tuesday night’s service was held outside of First Church of God of St. Matthews, not far from where Fludd and Chalk lost their lives near Scenic Lane.

The event was hosted by Petronia Watson, who told the crowd that she met Fludd and Chalk about four years ago. That’s when Fludd’s mother brought the Royal Dynasty Dance Team to St. Matthews.

“Since then, I’ve been really locked in. They’re like my nieces,” Watson said.

“I don’t think I have enough words to just express how I’m feeling, how much I’m going to miss Jada and Ania,” she told the crowd.

Fludd, who was known as “Triple Threat,” according to Watson, was sometimes shy, but “was a beast on the dance floor.”

“Jada made sure she smiled,” Watson said.

“Just last Friday night, she made sure and gave me a hug,” she added.

Chalk was called “Boss Baby,” Watson said. “And it’s ‘Boss Baby’ for a reason.”

“Every time I came around, Ania was ready to give me a hug. She’s going to ask me for some money for the vending machine and she’s going to ask me if we’re going to have a sleepover,” Watson said.

“We love y’all and we miss y’all,” Watson said.

Kayla Williams, another parent involved with Royal Dynasty Dance Team, said, “Three years ago, our family became a family member of Royal Dynasty.”

“Our queens are rulers on the dance floor,” Williams said.

“Jada will truly be missed for all of her outstanding achievements. Ania will be missed for her sassiness, her big smile with her beautiful dimples,” she added.

Just after the crowd released balloons, they sang “Happy Birthday” to Fludd. She would’ve turned 17 on Tuesday.

Kimberly Bradley said after the event that, “Both girls were so pretty.”

Bradley has known Fludd and Chalk since 2021.

“Boss Baby Ania, she earned that title,” Bradley said.

“She was definitely that,” she added.

Bradley said Chalk “always carried a smile.”

“She told you how it was. If you didn’t like it, so what,” Bradley added.

“She danced her heart out,” she said.

Funeral plans for Fludd and Chalk haven’t been announced.
