DENMARK – Voorhees University plans to unveil a statue honoring its founder, Elizabeth Evelyn Wright, at noon Thursday, April 4. It will take place at the Elizabeth Evelyn Wright Legacy Plaza, located adjacent to St. Philip’s Chapel.
Wright was the first African American female to lay the foundation for the establishment of a historically Black college or university.
Through her tireless efforts, she established Voorhees University, an institution committed to providing access to quality education for all, regardless of background or circumstance.
The unveiling ceremony will celebrate the enduring legacy of Wright and her contributions to education and society. Members of the community, alumni, faculty, staff and students are invited to join to pay tribute to her remarkable life and achievements.
“We are thrilled to be able to honor the founder of Voorhees University in this distinguished manner,” said Dr. Ronnie Hopkins, president of Voorhees.
