Orangeburg County, the Salvation Army and The Times and Democrat are working together to ensure that less-fortunate children have something special under their Christmas trees this year.
Kyla Fraser, president and director of local sales and marketing at The T&D, said the newspaper has launched the “Very Merry Toy Drive” to help children who would otherwise not receive toys this holiday season.
“We are very excited to be partnering with The Salvation Army and Orangeburg County in helping collect as many new, unwrapped toys as we can prior to the holidays. There is so much need in our community this time of year, and we are on board to help ensure that all children in our community have toys this Christmas season,” Fraser said.
Once the collection efforts are complete, the Salvation Army will manage the pickup and distribution of the toys.

Marie S. Harrison has taken over as director of the local Salvation Army office, which has relocated from its former site at 813 Nottingham St. to 265 Stonewall Jackson Blvd. across from the Walmart Neighborhood Market.
Harrison has said that everything from Barbie dolls to remote-controlled cars, along with bicycles, are among the most requested items on children’s Christmas lists this year.
People are asked to donate new, unwrapped toys by placing them in a box located in The T&D’s downstairs lobby any weekday before 12:30 p.m., or at one of the nine sites across the community. Toys can be dropped off through Friday, Dec. 8.
Other drop-off sites include: Fogle’s Piggly Wiggly locations in Denmark, Bamberg and Neeses, as well as its locations on Columbia Road and Edisto Drive, House of Pizza on Sims Street, Orangeburg County Library, Migo’s and Stop-n-Pop.
“Normally we collect upwards of 500 new toys across The T&D Region, and we would like to encourage and challenge everyone in the community to participate again this year,” Fraser said.
