VANCE — Making road trips safer – that’s the goal of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, says Capt. Joseph C. Elliott, the newly named commander of Troop 7.

Elliott accepted an invitation from Vance Mayor Michael Aiken Sr. to speak at the town council’s monthly meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 26.
He introduced himself and answered some questions about traffic laws relating to school zones, school buses and four-wheelers.
He encouraged the public to tell the patrol about locations and times when traffic laws are being flouted. “We won’t know unless you do,” he said.
“Don’t hesitate to reach out to us,” he added. Visit or call a patrol office, wave to get the attention of an officer in a parked vehicle, or – especially when it’s urgent – dial *HP (or *47) on a mobile phone.

Aiken said that he had contacted Elliott twice, once to increase patrols in and near Vance, and then to report a vehicle that was parked illegally and jutting out into a road. He expressed appreciation for the patrol’s quick and effective responses both times.
Accompanying Elliott at the meeting was Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover, who is assigned to Troop 7’s community relations unit. Troop 7 serves seven counties, including Orangeburg, Calhoun, and Bamberg.
In other business, Aiken announced that the Orangeburg County School Board approved a resolution on Sept. 12 to eventually donate the Vance-Providence Elementary School property to the town.
Ground was broken on Sept. 8 for a brand-new East Elementary School in Holly Hill. When it is completed, it will replace the present Vance-Providence, St. James-Gaillard, and Holly Hill Elementary schools.
