Two suspects are charged with murder in the death of an Orangeburg man found dead in his yard last week, according to Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell.

“This is just absolutely senseless,” Ravenell said in a release. “But they’ll get at least 30 years to think about their actions.”

Nasir Washington, 18, and Jaquail Mack, 17, both of Orangeburg, have each been charged with murder. Mack is additionally charged with possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

Mack’s charge falls under a 2019 law that automatically reclassifies a 17-year-old as an adult if he’s charged with a Class D or higher felony, according to the sheriff’s office.

The two were charged after 18-year-old Ricke Irick’s mother found his body in their Estate Court yard on Nov. 29.

His mother told deputies that she received a call around 8:40 p.m. the night before from a family member who reported seeing her truck on Rowesville Road near the Dollar General, an incident report states.

She called Irick and asked him to bring her truck home.

Irick returned and his mother went to her room.

She said Irick left shortly after returning home, but she wasn’t certain of the exact time.

She heard gunshots that “appeared to be very close to her residence,” a deputy wrote in the report.

Irick’s mother attempted to reach him by phone, but wasn’t successful.

She then walked along the property to see if she could find him, but couldn’t, so she went to bed.

As she left for work just after 7:30 a.m., she “had a feeling that she needed to get out and check the other side of the residence,” the report states. She found her son’s body.

During a hearing on Monday, bond was deferred to a later date for Washington, of 256 Broad St., and Mack, of 110 Muna Ave. A circuit court judge will have to make a decision on their bonds.

More arrests are expected, Ravenell said.
