A painting by Orangeburg artist Leo Twiggs was selected for the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
“Seated Man,” a painting by Leo Twiggs, was selected for the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
The painting, titled “Seated Man,” was originally purchased by the Johnson Collection of Chicago, publishers of Ebony and Jet magazines. Later it was purchased for the Larry and Brenda Thompson collection of Atlanta, where it was acquired by the National Gallery.
The National Gallery maintains the nation’s art collection. It is the most visited museum in the nation with more than 3.3 million visitors last year.
Leo Twiggs is distinguished artist in residence at Claflin University and professor emeritus at SC State University. He is the winner of the $10,000 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art and, last year, he was awarded the prestigious Dean’s Cross for Servant Leadership from the Virginia Theological Seminary in Arlington.
