National Hurricane Center forecasters are keeping an eye on the Gulf of Mexico, where a tropical system could form that has the potential to impact Bamberg, Calhoun and Orangeburg counties.
An area of low pressure that originated along the Pacific coast of Central America is moving toward the northwest.
The National Hurricane Center says that there’s a 50 percent chance it could form into a tropical system over the next seven days.
Should the system become a tropical storm with sustained winds over 39 mph, it will be named Idalia (ee-DAL-ya).
The National Weather Service says next Wednesday and Thursday “are filled with uncertainty.” It’s expecting at least “a plume of tropical moisture” to move into the area.
The local impact will depend on the timing.

“Models are split on this very important detail, so the forecast is fairly uncertain currently,” the NWS states.
Forecasters are more confident that next week will be wetter and cooler.
While temperatures Friday and Saturday are forecast to reach 99 degrees, they are then forecast to slowly drop to a high of 89 on Wednesday.
There’s a 40 to 60 percent chance of rain in Orangeburg from Sunday through Wednesday.
