Trinity United Methodist Church will begin the celebration of its 158th anniversary on Saturday with a special art exhibit.

“Celebrating the Artwork of Young Artists of the Orangeburg Community” will feature 23 student artists from local schools. The event will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at the J.W. Curry Center on the church campus.

Bishop Marcus Matthews will speak Sunday at 10 a.m. Matthews’ topic will be “Remembering Our Past — Planning Our Future.” The retired United Methodist bishop is a Florence native. Matthews is a former Executive Secretary of the Council of Bishops and previously served as the Resident Bishop of the Baltimore-Washington Conference. He has served in numerous capacities including The General Commission on Religion and Race; The General Board of Global Ministries; president of The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry. He currently chairs the Board of Directors of Africa University.

The service will include music by national recording artist Willie Bradley. The fellowship luncheon following the service will feature comedian Rod Smith, a.k.a. “PK.”
The church was founded in 1866 as Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church. During and prior to the civil rights movement, it served as a gathering place for meetings and rallies led by prominent civil rights warriors such as the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Roy Wilkins, and Thurgood Marshall. It was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. The Rev. Dr. Eddie C. Williams is the pastor.
