Everyone’s favorite cartoon sponge is coming to the BlueBird Theatre as the Orangeburg Part-Time Players present “SpongeBob SquarePants the Musical.”
The show begins with news that undersea volcano Mount Humongous is set to erupt and destroy the town of Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob and a cast of characters must find a way to stop the eruption and save the city.
“The source material is obviously well known, but the author of the show encourages each group to let their imagination run wild,” director Tony DeAloia said. “We have to stick to the script, but there’s essentially free rein in how we tell the story.”
Wesley Battle plays the role of SpongeBob after having wowed DeAloia during the audition process.
“Before we started, I had no idea of a person who could portray the character,” DeAloia said. “(Wesley) was a lead in ‘Mousetrap,’ so I knew he could pull it off, but I had never heard him sing. His audition was head and shoulders above the others, and he’s done a phenomenal job.”

The main cast includes Caleb Battle (Mr. Krabs), Donovan Dukes (Patrick Star), Shields Fairey (Sandy Cheeks), Matt Kurz (Plankton) and Will Inabinette (Squidward).
“The main cast has been very easy to work with and has meshed well,” DeAloia said.
The score features music by David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Sara Bareilles, John Legend, Yolanda Adams, The Flaming Lips, and Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith.
“The music is phenomenal, and there’s truly something for every taste,” DeAloia said. “Plus, it’s just good music.
“One of my favorites songs is ‘(I Guess I) Miss You,’ which is sung between SpongeBob and Patrick. It has that classic bro-mance feel to it.”
The show also features a number of sight gags and sound effects played onstage by Donald Lee.
“SpongeBob SquarePants the Musical” opens at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1. It runs through the weekend at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3.
For the first time in over a decade, the Part-Time Players will offer a second weekend, with shows beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, and running through Sunday.
