The U.S. Army’s Columbia Recruiting Battalion mobilized in response to the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene, which severely affected the Spruce Pine community and surrounding areas in western North Carolina.

Under the leadership of Major Edward Littrell, the battalions operations chief, and with the identification of urgent needs by Staff Sergeant Atkins, the “Swamp Fox” Battalion coordinated an extensive relief operation to deliver essential supplies to those in need.

As ground access to the affected areas remains nearly impossible, Team Swamp Fox partnered with the Orangeburg Municipal Airport to deploy 6 fixed-wing aircraft for aerial resupply missions.

The operation focuses on delivering critical goods such as Meals Ready-to-Eat (MREs), bottled water, diapers, baby formula, hygiene products, and both non-perishable and perishable food items.

“This week we are proud to stand together as a community to support our fellow citizens,” Major Edward Littrell said. “Our priority is to ensure that the people in Spruce Pine receive the vital resources they need to recover from this disaster.”

Team Swamp Fox partnered with the Orangeburg Municipal Airport to deploy 6 fixed-wing aircraft for aerial resupply missions.

In just a few days, Team Swamp Fox has gathered nearly 125 tons of supplies through coordinated donation efforts involving multiple military installations, including Eisenhower, Jackson and Liberty. Over 40 boxes of MREs and a significant amount of water are ready for delivery, scheduled for Saturday.

On the ground, Staff Sergeant Atkins and Sergeant First Class Wolfe, both from the Asheville Recruiting Company, have been pivotal in coordinating logistical efforts, working alongside local volunteer fire departments in search-and-rescue operations.

As part of the mission, the Battalion Commander and Command Sergeant Major accompanied the team to oversee the logistics of the aerial delivery and assess the needs on the ground.

Bishop Charles Coleman of True Faith Baptist Church in Eutawville led a relief effort after Hurricane Helene caused devastation across six states.

“Our commitment extends beyond our NCOs to encompass the entire community affected by this disaster,” Battalion Commander said.

Team Swamp Fox is grateful for the support of local churches, volunteer organizations and the commissary on Jackson, which have played a vital role in this humanitarian effort.
