A microburst damaged buildings in Orangeburg’s downtown area during a Tuesday evening thunderstorm.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Meteorologist-in-Charge Richard Okulski said a microburst with straight-line winds is to blame for Tuesday night’s storm damage. He was in Orangeburg to assess damage at the intersection of Broughton and Russell Streets on Wednesday.
He confirmed there was no tornado.
A microburst is a localized column of sinking air (downdraft) within a thunderstorm.
Citing Orangeburg County Emergency Preparedness as the source, the National Weather Service reported after midnight Wednesday that the damage extended from Broughton and Russell to Whaley and Crystal streets, ending at Woodbine Drive.
A large tree was down on a house on Woodbine, the NWS stated at 12:32 a.m. The storm damage occurred around 9 p.m., with an additional report citing a tree blocking Cannon Bridge Road.

At midmorning Wednesday, debris, including pieces of tin from roofs and wood from awnings that had once fronted downtown businesses, lay strewn in the street along Broughton.
“Portions of Broughton Street near Russell Street are closed as a result of last night’s storm damage,” City of Orangeburg Public Information Officer Jennifer Van Cleave said.
City crews are in the process of cleaning up after the storm, she said.
