Southern Propane on John C. Calhoun Drive has reopened its permanent facility a little over a year and a half after fire totally destroyed the building.
The office is located at 1169 John C. Calhoun Drive.
“It is nice instead of working in a mobile trailer,” Southern Propane General Manager Eddie Thompson said. “We had a mobile out front for a year and a half. We didn’t have any room and no storage.”

“Now we have a showroom, a warehouse area, a conference room,” he continued. “It is really nice.”
Thompson said the building is smaller than their previous one, but the current facility is more practical.
“The showroom area was huge,” Thompson said. “It was too big. We just didn’t need all that, but we didn’t have enough warehouse area. We kind of balanced it out now and we were able to build a smaller building.”

Thompson expressed his appreciation for those customers who stayed with the company during the transition period.

“I am not going to say we didn’t lose some. We did, but not many,” Thompson said. “We are still the same folks who have been here forever. We still do business the same.”
The business provides a number of services: appliance sales (tankless water heaters, fireplaces); propane conversions; propane installation; efficiency tests, and propane repairs, according to the business website.
Orangeburg Pecan Company is up for sale
Southern Propane employs eight in its Orangeburg office and three in Chapin.
A fire destroyed the business in February 2022.
The fire’s cause was later attributed to improper disposal of boiled linseed oil.
As a result of the fire, the physical store in Orangeburg temporarily closed. A temporary office in a work trailer was set up at the site.
Southern Propane is subsidiary of Canadian-based Superior Plus Propane. Southern Propane also has offices in Chapin and Lugoff, and Monroe, North Carolina, according to its website.
The business is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
