The remains discovered near Holly Hill on Jan. 4 have been identified as Melissa Aguilar, who was last seen by her family on Aug. 17.
Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell made the announcement during a press conference held on Monday afternoon.
Her manner of death has not yet been determined. No one has been charged in her death. Investigators are looking into the possibility that her death may have been a homicide.
Orangeburg County Coroner Samuetta Marshall confirmed the remains were identified by dental records.
Aguilar, 49, of Fourwind Road, Holly Hill, was last seen wearing a black T-shirt and sweatpants.
She left her residence after she’d had an argument with her boyfriend, according to Maj. Rene Williams of the sheriff’s office.

Williams reported that the sheriff’s office brought a search dog to where Aguilar was last seen, but the dog’s track went cold when it reached Coach Road.
In a previous incident, Aguilar had been reported missing and was later located at a church on Coach Road, Williams said.
