The Democratic and Republican parties will hold primaries in South Carolina on Tuesday, June 11.

Voters will have to choose whether they wish to participate in the Democratic primary or the Republican primary.

Orangeburg County Voter Registration Director Aurora Smalls has explained that voters can vote in either primary, but not in both.

“For the June primary, a voter will have to choose whether they want to vote in the Democratic or Republican primary, where all the candidates on their ballot will be for the party,” Smalls has said.

Voters get to choose which primary they want to vote in because voters in South Carolina don’t register by political party. Voters can vote in either primary Tuesday, even if they participated in another party’s presidential primary.

Any necessary runoffs will be held on Tuesday, June 25. People who vote in the Democratic primary can’t participate in Republican primary runoffs, and vice versa.

A vote in the primary has no bearing on voting in the general election on Nov. 5.

The early voting period ended on Friday, June 7.

At the polls, voters will be required to show one of the following forms of photo identification:

• S.C. driver’s license

• S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles ID card

• S.C. Voter Registration card with photo

• Federal military ID

• U.S. passport

Polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
