A downtown Orangeburg pizzeria and restaurant announced it is closing its Russell Street restaurant with plans to reopen in Santee.
Tulio’s Pizzeria and Restaurant located at 1128 Russell St. across from the BlueBird Theater says it will be closing.
Father and daughter Marco and Laura Castillo opened Tulio’s Pizzeria and Restaurant at 1128 Russell Street across from the BlueBird Theater in 2021.
“We don’t have an official closing date yet but our lease is coming up to an end and we decided not to renew due to many factors,” restaurant manager Laura Castillo said. “This decision wasn’t easy to make, but we feel it is for the best.”
“We appreciate all the support we received since opening and the outpouring of love since we announced that we were closing,” Castillo continued. “We’re super excited to bring Tulio’s Pizzeria to Santee; we hope that our regulars will come visit us and excited to meet lots of new people!”
The restaurant will be opening at 705 Bass Drive in the Food Lion shopping center in Santee.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t find anything in Orangeburg,” Castillo said. “We’re still not sure of an official opening day, but as soon as we have one we will let the public know.”
The restaurant has had a full menu complete with starters, salads, burgers, grilled sandwiches, hot subs, cold subs, wraps, New York style pizza, specialty pizzas, calzones and strombolis, dinner, and pasta entrees. The restaurant also has desserts such as cannoli, cheesecakes and tiramisu.
The restaurant is not the first to open and then close at the Russell Street location in recent years.
La Pasta Bistro & Grill opened in late 2007, followed by El Rodeo’s Mexican Restaurant and then Soprano’s Pizza in June 2009. The building was vacant for a couple of years before a sandwich and wing restaurant, 1128 Pub & Eatery, opened and closed in 2013.
JoJo’s Filipino cuisine opened its doors in May 2014.
Thelma’s on Main opened in 2015.
Upon Tulio’s closure, the future of the Russell Street building is uncertain. Attempts to reach the building’s owner were unsuccessful.
