The Orangeburg County School District Teachers of the Year kicked off their “Labor of Love” project at the Samaritan House on Wednesday, Feb. 14.
This passion project was spearheaded by the 2023-24 District Teacher of the Year, Audrey Irick. She met with Samaritan House Executive Director Henry Miller to discuss her platform, which is to “Lead in Love.”
She explained that being a teacher is also a ministry, and helping the Samaritan House would be the perfect way for Teachers of the Year to embrace the community by providing a service.
During the month of February, each TOY began collecting a minimum of $5 from each faculty and staff member at their homeschool.
In addition, five TOYs volunteered every Tuesday and Thursday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. to serve dinner.
One Teacher of the Year, Alessandra Ott from Bethune-Bowman Elementary, participated the entire month.

On March 14, Superintendent Shawn Foster, Irick and several representatives from the TOY cabinet presented a check in the amount of $2,910 to Miller to support his efforts at the Samaritan House.
The Samaritan House provides temporary housing, outreach programs and transitional services to the homeless in Orangeburg.
