The Orangeburg County Library will close all its branches for three days to upgrade its catalog system.
The library will close Tuesday, Nov. 7 through Thursday, Nov. 9 to conduct the upgrade.
The upgrade will be done to improve the library’s integrated library system, which will enhance capabilities for patrons and employees.
“We are migrating to an integrated library system in the cloud as opposed to being housed on the server,” Orangeburg County Library Director Anna Zacherl said. “It will be more reliable and save money over time.”
The upgrade will cost about $10,750.
Library and patron records will be moved to a cloud-based system.
Zacherl said the upgrade will enable the library to better serve individuals during outreach events such as festivals. For example, signing up for library cards at such events will be easier.

The system will also make it easier for the library to keep an inventory of items.
“The patrons who come to us frequently will know that every now and then we will not have access to records because Polaris has not been accessible every now and then,” Zacherl said.
The library server system is currently several versions behind where it should be and it costs an average of about $50,000 to purchase a new server each time one becomes obsolete. Zacherl says the current server also crashes frequently.
“The new servers to hold the information are getting more and more expensive,” Zacherl said.
Also, web-hosted systems update automatically, she said.
The three-day upgrade will occur during the week of Election Day and Veterans Day, meaning the library will be closed the entire week of Nov. 6-10 due to these two holidays.
The library will reopen after Veterans Day weekend on Nov. 13.
