“I was actually speechless just to see the community come together, and not only the Norway community, but other people from other areas come out and support our survivors,” event organizer Tonya James said.

“I just want to thank everyone that donated door prizes and anyone that helped sponsor this event. It was a beautiful sunny day. We had them out there from infants to those over 80. We had all ages,” she said.

“Then we had the SCRA Sling Shot Riders to do the first lap of the walk, which was the memorial lap in honor of all those who have lost the battle (to breast cancer),” James said.
Representatives from the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office then led the walk, followed by members of the Girl Scouts Troop 407 of Norway.
“We also had the Gifted by Tonya Marching Band perform,” James said.
She said members of Why Not Young Lives?, a youth mentoring group of Orangeburg, were the official hostesses for the event.
The Promise Land Band provided musical entertainment during the event, which also included door prizes and a Kids Zone sponsored by Healthy Blue.
DJ Sharie of Barnwell also provided music, along with Emily Holiday of Williston, who performed her newly released single “Freedom Talk.” All breast cancer survivors were given a free CD of Holiday’s single.
Members of the Norway Senior Citizens Council were the event’s special guests.
“They had a VIP tent that was hosted by Mrs. Betty Void, assistant director of the Orangeburg County Council on Aging, who is a survivor, too,” James said.
North native Deirdre Mack, a breast cancer survivor and a member of James’ church, was this year’s speaker.
“We’re already planning for next year. Next year’s event will be Oct. 4 under the theme “The Survivor Roundup,” James said.
