Some areas in The T&D Region have entered the first stage of drought following a dry, late summer and fall.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says eastern Orangeburg County, northern Calhoun County and most of Bamberg County are “abnormally dry.”
“Abnormally dry” is the lowest of the five drought intensity levels NOAA uses. Other levels in increasing intensity are: moderate, severe, extreme and exceptional.
Recent rains over the weekend helped improve the dry conditions somewhat. A chance of rain is forecast Wednesday night through Friday night of this week.
Orangeburg County might begin holding construction companies responsible for any damage caused on county-maintained roads.
Reporting stations this weekend near Holly Hill recorded about 2.08 inches of rain. About 1.70 inches fell near Santee, 1.06 inches fell near Elloree and 1 inch fell near North.
Two-week forecasts for the area call for wetter and warmer than average conditions for this time of year.
