The South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (SCDJJ) Prevention and Intervention Team partnered with Big Homie Little Homie, The Brickhouse Foundation and Gangs In Peace recently hosted the Legacy of Leaders Gala, an event honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to youth development across the state of South Carolina. The gala, a celebration of leadership and service, recognized L. Zimmerman Keitt and Aries Moore from Project Life: Positeen. Keitt also serves on Orangeburg City Council.

Keitt, a pillar of SCDJJ and the Community Service Division, was awarded the Lifetime Dedication and Impact Award for her unwavering dedication and decades of volunteer service. This honor is reserved for those who have profoundly influenced youth development through sustained commitment, transforming countless lives and leaving a legacy of positive change.

Additionally, the evening celebrated Aries Moore, a participant of Project Life Positeen led by Keitt, who received the Young Visionary Award. This accolade highlights a teen whose potential and leadership have made an impact within their afterschool center. Moore’s nomination, accompanied by endorsements from Keitt, recognized his creativity, initiative, and dedication to community service.

The mission of Project Life: Positeen is to provide a diverse after-school program of tutorial services, character building and cultural experiences for at-risk youth needed remediation and enrichment to improve academic performance, and those in need of services to improve positive attitudes and acceptable behavior. The program is based on the belief that all children can learn.

Keitt, a graduate of Claflin University and a purchasing agent for 30 years, started Project Life: Positeen in 1992. Today, the program has four sites at Brookdale, Mellichamp, Rivelon elementary schools and at 349 Summers Ave. Project Life: Positeen serves 225 students with a budget of $54,000 and has a staff of 19 primarily retired teachers and employees.

Project Life: Positeen was cited as a “Best Practices” program by HUD in 1998 and received the Orangeburg County All-American Civic Award in 2005.

The Legacy of Leaders Gala highlighted SCDJJ’s commitment to recognizing the efforts of both seasoned advocates and emerging young leaders, honoring their contributions to building a brighter future for South Carolina’s youth.
