As part of Black History Month, South Carolina State University’s History Program and Department of Social Sciences will present the Oscar-winning historical drama “Judas and the Black Messiah” at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, in Nance Hall room 106.

The showing launches a series of “movie nights” open to the entire university and the public. In each iteration, a film featuring some aspect of history — carefully selected by the history faculty — will be shown for free on a weekday evening.

Preceding each film will be a brief presentation by a faculty member who will provide background on the movie and historical context, as well as make any relevant connections to current events.

The presentation for “Judas and the Black Messiah” will be given by Dr. Christopher Rounds. The movie centers on the true story of how the FBI infiltrated civil rights organizations in the 1960s, caused dissention in the ranks, and ultimately murdered key figures — in this case, Fred Hampton of the Chicago Black Panther Party, who was on the verge of forging an interracial alliance to achieve real and lasting social, political, and economic reforms.
