Former state Sen. Maggie Wallace Glover will be the guest speaker at Trinity United Methodist Church for Laity Sunday, Oct. 20, at 10 a.m. The theme is “Rise up! And Retain the Spirit’s Good and Beautiful Things.”
Glover, a Florence native, holds a B.S. in English/Speech with a minor in theater from Fayetteville State and an M.Ed. in guidance and counseling from Francis Marion University.

She is recognized for achieving a string of “firsts” in the state. In 1983, Glover became the first African American woman elected to serve on the Florence District One School Board. In 1988, the Democrat became the first African American woman elected to the S.C. House from the 6th Congressional District. After two terms in the House, in January 1993, she became the first African American woman to serve in the S.C. Senate. She served until 2004.
Glover has received a number of awards including an honorary degree and, in 1993, the Order of the Palmetto, the highest award a South Carolinian can receive. In 1978, she also received the U.S. Army Commendation Medal along with an Honorable Discharge following her service from 1975 to 1978.
