Fire destroyed a family’s home near Holly Hill on Thursday night.

The Toney Bay Road home was occupied when the fire started, but everyone got out, according to Orangeburg County Fire District Director Teddy Wolfe.  Most went to a family member’s home next door.

A man who lived in the burning home stayed at the site. He had a pet pit bull who was not harmed, Wolfe said.

The fire started around 8:30 p.m. at 1450 Toney Bay Road.

The first firefighters arrived nine minutes later. Half of the single-wide mobile home was in flames.

Firefighters asked for additional personnel and water tankers.

The following departments assisted: Eutawville, Holly Hill, Providence and Vance.

The Orangeburg County Office of Emergency Services provided a rehabilitation unit.

Wolfe said the origin and cause of the fire was undetermined due to the extent of damage sustained to the home.

Wolfe said one way to prevent summertime fires at home is by plugging window air conditioning power cords directly into the wall outlets, rather than using an extension cord.

“The window units have a significant draw of power and most likely will overwhelm the extension cord. If window unit air conditioners are needed to cool a dwelling, plug them directly into an outlet,” Wolfe said.
