Fire damaged a Treadwell Street home on Thursday afternoon in Orangeburg.
The five residents weren’t inside of the house when the fire broke out on the second floor, but some were playing outside and others were sitting on the porch.
Jacqueline Garrett has been living at the home for 38 years.
Garrett said she was sitting on the porch when the fire started.
“I’m still not believing this stuff is real,” Garrett said.
Garrett has had her share of sorrows over the years.
She lost her husband to cancer six years ago.
Her son, Joshua Santana James, 36, was murdered in Orangeburg on July 11, 2019.
Three years ago, Garrett’s mother died.

And now Garrett’s house has been damaged by fire.
“I thank the Lord each time I wake up, but I also ask him, ‘What’s next?’” she said.
Orangeburg Department of Public Safety firefighters arrived on the scene within two minutes after they were dispatched, Battalion Chief/Fire Marshal Jonathan Winningham said.
The firefighters could see flames from two of the upstairs windows when they arrived.
Firefighters got the fire under control within five to seven minutes, Winningham said.
The fire was limited to the corner room on the second floor, he said.
Ten firefighters from ODPS’s four stations helped put the fire out.
Winningham said the American Red Cross is assisting the family, consisting of three adults and children ages 6 and 4.
