Claflin University celebrated its 156th Matriculation Day Convocation, symbolizing the start of the 2024-25 academic year.

The convocation was held in Jonas T. Kennedy Health and Wellness Center’s Tullis Arena on Sept. 10. The class of 2028 matriculated with the second-highest median GPA in seven years at 3.6.

“This is just a microcosm of the excellence that is in this room,” Claflin President Dwaun J. Warmack said. At graduation, I will talk about what I define as Claflin magic.

“This is just the beginning of what that Claflin magic looks like.”

Bishop Simeon Moultrie, left, with Claflin University President Dwaun J. Warmack at the 2024 Matriculation Day ceremonies.

This year’s convocation address was given by guest speaker Bishop Simeon Moultrie, who made reference to the university’s panther mascot, inspiring students to take on its traits.

“I need you to lock in like panthers do,” Moultrie said. “I need you to be resilient like panthers are.”

Moultrie, a South Carolina State University graduate, said college is about students finding themselves. He said students will need to focus, adapt and learn independence.

“Like a panther, you will face challenges and environments and unexpected setbacks,” Moultrie said. “But you have to adjust, you have to learn how to evolve and thrive wherever you are.”

Through these setbacks, Moultrie said, students must find a way to remain strong. He ensured the class of ‘28 that they do have what it takes to overcome.

“Panthers have the ability to attack and handle animals larger than themselves,” Moultrie said. “You are in this room because there’s something in you that said I can attack or defeat something bigger than me.”

Moultrie said students can also lean on faith to stay resilient.

“I want you to understand that there’s no need for you to be afraid because the Bible says that God has not given us the spirit of fear,” Moultrie said. “But he’s given us love, and power, and a sound mind.”

“When you understand that you have to stay focused on your goal, nothing can defeat you, nothing can stop you.”

Warmack, who recently celebrated five years as the university’s president, was awarded a key to the city by Orangeburg Mayor Micheal Butler. The honor came as a surprise to Warmack, as it was not included in the event’s programming.

The convocation included a welcome from serving Miss and Mister Claflin, Genesis Morris, and Darrion Campbell, and a speech by Student Government Association President Joshua Williams. It also marked the official induction of this year’s Student Government Association officers.
