The City of Orangeburg will celebrate the 75th anniversary of Mirmow Field Sunday, Feb. 4, with a double-header featuring Claflin University and Morris College at 1 p.m.

Mirmow Field, which was named in honor of Edward Mirmow, the former director of athletic programs for Orangeburg’s American Legion Post 4, has been the heart of not only baseball but other sports in the area since it was developed, according to Interim Parks and Recreation Director Shawn Taylor.

“Mirmow Field has a storied legacy from being home to the Orangeburg Cardinals, the semi-pro Orangeburg Braves, and the Binghamton Triplets in their spring training days, to hosting prestigious events like the American Legion World Series and the Dixie Majors World Series,” he said. “The field even achieved Hollywood fame when it was featured in the movie ‘Major League: Back to the Minors’ in 1998.”

Historic Mirmow Field still serves as a staple of the community in Orangeburg.

Notable Major League players such as Herm Winningham, Mookie Wilson, Preston Wilson, Nate Snell, Bill Spiers and Mike Sharperson have played on the field. Currently Mirmow Field is home to Claflin University’s baseball team and Orangeburg American Legion Post 4, along with numerous high school teams.

Mirmow has been recently updated and now features a press box with heating and air conditioning; a warning track has been added to provide a safer playing ground; wall padding was added to the outfield wall and behind home plate; new electrical lighting was added to locker rooms, the concession stand and bathrooms; dugout fencing has been installed; and painting has been completed.

In celebration of Mirmow’s 75th anniversary, admission will be free. There will be giveaways, mascots, games between innings, and children will be allowed to run the bases at the conclusion of the first game. Food items will be available for purchase at the stadium and a food truck will be onsite.
