After a day of Diamond Youth Baseball, the City of Orangeburg livened the night for players, their families and anyone else who wanted to join in the fun.

The city hosted a series of free performances over the weekend at the Orangeburg Recreation Complex.

Local residents Deborah Bonnett, Jackie Gulley, and Kathy Hardison enjoyed music from the Surfside band on Friday, during the first night of the concert series. The “Beach Night in the Park” theme featured Surfside singing beach, blues and oldies.

“They’re great. I wish more people knew where they were. We found it when we were doing a drive-around tour when we got here,” Gulley said.

The band performed with high energy, while encouraging crowd participation.

A concession stand sold “Ballpark Bites.” The menu consisted of curly fries, roasted peanuts, chicken tenders, nachos and cheese, brisket sandwiches, hot dogs, popcorn, candy and an assortment of beverages.

Concertgoers set up their lawn chairs in the shade as they enjoyed the outdoor concert.

Bonnett, Gulley, and Hardison typically enjoy local concerts together.

“They have stuff downtown, and we usually go to that by the market,” Bonnett said.

Gulley recalled attending a previous Surfside band concert at the amphitheater. Surfside performed at the Orangeburg Festival of Roses in 2023.

“I really do enjoy them,” Gulley said.

Hardison, who arrived at the baseball tournament several hours earlier, recounted her interactions with visitors.

“It’s been a really nice crowd. I’ve talked to people from North Carolina, Tennessee, Viriginia from the different teams that are here. They’ve all been really impressed by the facility,” Hardison said.

The Orangeburg County Chamber of Commerce predicted that tens of thousands of people from 11 Southeast states would be in Orangeburg for the tournament.

Live entertainment continued through the weekend.

Cash Money Experience took over Saturday night for an “R&B Night in Orangeburg” themed concert. The concert series ended on Sunday with DJ Red, who spun a “Dance Party in the Park” set.
