What this exhibition intends to highlight is the evolutionary structure of the Black family. Even though Black families existed biologically, they often were not acknowledged as a unit, weren’t able to live together and often did not know where their family members were prior to emancipation.

The 20-panel exhibition in the Lusty Gallery, chronicles through images and narratives, the remarkable story of the coalescence of the Black family. The narrative begins with the efforts of freed slaves to locate family members by any means at their disposal: ads in newspapers, word of mouth or traveling long distances.

The exhibition’s images and narratives continue with the efforts for lawful recognition of husbands and wives and their children, to secure a place to call home and to work the land and a space to worship.

“Sunday School to Monday School,” another of the panels, highlights the efforts of churches such as Bull Swamp Baptist Church, here in Orangeburg, to bring schools to their communities, reducing illiteracy and increasing opportunity through education for their youth.

“The Black Family United and Resilient,” exhibition metaphorically goes full circle: Black family reunions place great importance on history, treasuring the old and their oral history and the young for continuing the family. Church features largely and is where time is set aside for services or to visit ancestral gravesites.

The exhibition was funded by the children of Andrew and Eartha Glover and is to honor their memory and because through “their words and deeds, they taught their children the power and importance of family.”

The exhibition continues through March 28 at the Orangeburg County Fine Arts Center, 649 Riverside Drive. The Arts Center is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The exhibition can be viewed outside these hours by request.
