The Senior Citizens’ Day Committee of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Beta Zeta Omega Chapter partnered with the Orangeburg County Council on Aging to sponsor and celebrate Senior Citizens’ Day on Sept. 10. The goal is to assist and work with senior citizens in local communities by planning and implementing a special activity that observes Senior Citizens’ Month and Grandparents’ Sunday.

The sorority presented a program including greetings, prayer, and the poem- “a Smile” as well as the reading “Life of a Sixty,” a senior-citizen song, “If You’re Happy and You Know It,” strolls, and the distribution of 100 care bags to seniors in attendance.

Distribution of 200 additional care bags took place Sept. 6 to 13 during the Meals on Wheels home deliveries of hot and frozen meals to seniors in the various Orangeburg County communities.
The 300 bags included paper towels, hand sanitizer wipes, gloves, masks, bottled water, bath tissue, Lance Cheese Snacks, mints and resource materials; items from MUSC Health -Orangeburg’s Outreach Program; and BINGO gifts with special COVID BINGO cards attached. These gifts were donated by the undergraduate members of Beta Sigma (South Carolina State University) and Gamma Nu Chapters (Claflin University) in conjunction with Beta Zeta Omega Chapter.

Grandparents’ Day is an official national holiday and is celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day, which fell on Sept. 8. President Biden’s Sept. 11 “National Grandparents Day 2024 -A Proclamation,” states that “For so many Americans, grandparents are the first people they look to for comfort, love, and guidance. Grandparents carry family wisdom, share their stories, and are the core of their families.
