Fire burned eight Carrington Townhome units in Orangeburg on Friday afternoon.

The fire started just after 5 p.m. at the back of one of the units on 901 Corona Drive.

David Benjamin, his wife and two children lived in the unit that initially caught fire.

Benjamin said he’d just gotten out of the shower and smelled smoke.

“I ran down the stairs and by the time I got downstairs, the fire was coming through the kitchen window,” Benjamin said.

He said someone set a bag of leaves on fire near the townhome on Thursday.

“I knew I kept smelling it and the apartment man caught it and he put it out,” Benjamin said.

Benjamin said someone came back and set a fire again, but this time, it spread to his moped. His moped contained gasoline and that accelerated the fire, he said.

“I told my wife to call 911,” he said.

He and his family were able to get out of the townhome safely.

They’d been living there for 11 months.

Anthony Davis lived next door to the townhome where the fire started.

“I smelled smoke. I opened my door and I ran to the back and tried to get a fire extinguisher to try to control the blaze,” he said.

Davis and four other people live in his unit. Davis has been living there for about three years.

Benjamin and Davis said they’d not heard any reports of anyone being injured due to the fire.

The responding agencies included the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety, West Middle Fire Department, Four Holes Fire Department, Jamison Fire Department, Orangeburg County Fire District and Orangeburg County Office of Emergency Services.

The fire remains under investigation.
