SC State Public Service & Agriculture (PSA) announced Christopher Green, M. Ed, GCDF, has been named 1890 Extension Midlands Region director, serving Barnwell, Bamberg, Calhoun and Orangeburg counties. Green began his role in November 2023.

Green will oversee the various extension program initiatives, including 4-H youth development; community and economic development; education, innovation, and support; family, nutrition, and health; and sustainable agriculture and natural resources.

He is also responsible for expanding the Midlands program’s footprint within its various communities and raising awareness with citizens who are not familiar with it.

Mark Nettles, SC State 1890 Extension agent for sustainable agriculture and natural resources for the Midlands Region, has been selected as a recipient of the 2024 Impact Award for Environmental Excellence by the Foundation for Community Impact and Health Equity. The recognition celebrates Nettles’ commitment and contributions to environmental sustainability within the Midlands Region and across the state of South Carolina.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to lead our Midlands team and accompany them as they go out into the various communities and make connections with our stakeholders,” said Green. “My main goal is for our office to be the number one resource for our stakeholders and community; we want everyone in our regions to know what we offer at 1890 and the impact of our extension programs.”

Agriculture has changed since Clemson Extension agent Charles Davis first started helping Calhoun County’s farmers several decades ago.

Green stated that his goal as the new director is to bring consistency with building relationships within the community.

Green is currently working to address food security issues in his region by providing access to fresh produce. He anticipates hosting a farmers market in Bowman in June.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Wednesday announced the selection of 20 undergraduate and graduate students as the 2024 winners of the USDA Future Leaders in Agriculture program. The selected students hail from land-grant universities and Hispanic-serving institutions (HSI). Among the winners is Randall Pickering, of Orangeburg, a student at South Carolina State University, an 1890 land grant institution.

“We are excited to have Chris lead our Extension Midlands program and initiatives,” said Dr. Edoe Agbodjan, associate extension administrator. “To work in extension, one must go the extra mile to build life-long relationships and truly make an impact through service, and I believe he has shown the willingness and determination to want to make a positive change in the Midlands areas.”
