The Orangeburg County Transportation Committee met on Thursday, July 18, and voted to authorize improvements to 11 secondary state-maintained roads.

Wire Road, south of Branchville, will be resurfaced and the shoulder will be widened.

The other 10 roads to be resurfaced are Dickson Street, Wingate Street, and Third Avenue in the Orangeburg area; Reeves Branch Road, Byrd Avenue, and Warren Street in Branchville; Gibbs Drive south of Eutawville; Java Road and Sycamore Circle in western Orangeburg County; and the unnamed road at Joe Miller Park in Elloree.

The work is expected to cost approximately $1.5 million and should be completed by the end of 2025.

An estimated $54 million of the state’s $15.8 billion budget will help fund projects in Bamberg, Orangeburg and Calhoun counties.

Improvements to Dawson Road and Providence Road were authorized earlier and should be completed in 2025, said David Brandyburg, area engineer with the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

WASHINGTON – The Interstate 95 Lake Marion Bridge Replacement Project in Santee is to receive $175 million in federal funding, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced Wednesday in kicking off what the Biden-Harris administration calls its Investing in America tour.

Orangeburg County Public Works Director Henry Summers reported that improvements to Keegan Court and Family Circle are complete, but rain is delaying work on Thompson and Sub roads. Those are county-maintained roads.

An Orangeburg County lawmaker wants a sidewalk built along a busy highway, citing safety concerns for pedestrians.

Exposed rebar was discovered on a bridge over Cow Castle Creek. Summers said it could be repaired for “a tad over $5,000.” The committee voted to give him the money.

Brandyburg relayed a request from state Sen. Brad Hutto for the committee to consider authorizing the money to pave Begonia Road in the Neeses area.

The committee repeated the answer it has given for quite a few years: Not until all of the property owners donate the required rights-of-way to the county. Previous efforts to obtain the rights-of-way were unsuccessful.

The committee meets quarterly to decide how to spend a portion of the state gasoline tax revenues called “C” funds. Its members are appointed by the County Legislative Delegation.

Residents may contact Nikki A. Jones at 803-533-6106 for details on how to nominate a road for improvements.

The committee’s next meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, in the County Council chambers in the County Administrative Center, 1437 Amelia St., Orangeburg.
