A person died Wednesday when a tractor-trailer cab and a car crashed into a storage area owned by an Orangeburg church.
Bobby Ferrell of Georgia called the man who died, “a friend.”
“He was a good man and he had a great family. I didn’t know his family personally, but he talked about them a lot. He was just a straight-up guy,” Ferrell said.
The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office hasn’t yet released the name of the person who died, and Ferrell was reluctant to give his full name.
One person died and one person was injured on Wednesday when a tractor-trailer cab and a car crashed into the storage area of an Orangeburg church.
“They called him Polecat. That’s what we always called him. That’s what he went by. Everybody who knew him knew him, knew him as Polecat,” Ferrell said.

They worked together. He said the man was a trucker who worked out of McDonough, Georgia.

The accident occurred at about 3:25 p.m. Wednesday as a 2012 Volvo tractor-trailer was traveling north on U.S. Highway 301, according to Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover of the S.C. Highway Patrol.
The tractor-trailer was a mobile home transport truck that was towing a car behind it, according to an Orangeburg Department of Public Safety report.
The tractor-trailer traveled off the road to the left, struck a ditch and then the storage building belonging to Passion of the Cross Ministries, located at 1539 Five Chop Road.
The car it was towing also ended up in the building.
One person died in the crash. Another was removed through the window and transported to an area hospital.
The church is next door to the storage building.
Pastor Gwen Bookard expressed sympathy for the injured person, as well as the family of the person who died.
She learned of the crash from a telephone call.
“We got a call someone ran into the building. We didn’t know it was two vehicles at the time,” she said.
The cab and the car missed the main church building.
“I thank God right now that we’re still able to fellowship,” she said.
The crash is being investigated by the S.C. Highway Patrol.
